Valentines Day: The Numbers

By savvyscot

My personal ‘subscription’ to blogs has grown exponentially over the last few weeks. I am now reading almost 40 blogs! How does this compare to you guys? Do you follow many regularly?

I read a plethora (I like this word – means a variety) of different Valentines day related blog posts from various blogs. I decided not to write one myself and focus my time towards doing something nice for my wife – Some homemade chocolate strawberrys with a Chicken and Chorizo meal with dauphinoise potatoes and the secret family green bean recipe – was prettty good!

Anyways – back to the point of today’s post – I have kind of cheated with this one as I have borrowed an infographic from ‘Daily Infographic’

Valentines day

I want to highlight a couple of points that stand out to me – almost half a billion dollars are spent on candy in the US alone on the week leading up to Valentines day!!! How crazy is that! Secondly – men spend an average of $150 each. 150 million cards – surely this is on a decline. Then again anonymous emails are a bit creepy right?

Call my cynical, but I think Valentines day is a little overrated. I am not one of these people who think it is all cheesy and hate it – simply I think that so many restaurants and shops charge ridiculous amounts of money, for gifts that people feel obliged to buy, that nobody really wants. OK so flowers are a nice touch – but are all the teddy bears and overpriced chocolates worth it?

Mrs Scot and I did something different this year – we decided that we would design an experience for each other – that is plan a day. Instead of buying each other stereotypical gifts, we have planned a day for each other – chosen a restaurant and activity – hence avoiding the inflation of the 14th 🙂  – what did everyone else do?
