Eating Well and Saving? Yes, it’s Possible!

By Pauline

Make your own junk foods

Eating well is important not just for our taste buds, but also for our health. Being sick is not just a bad feeling, but it also costs a lot, so it’s better to be avoided. Eating healthy can put a serious dent in our monthly budget, though, as fresh fruits and vegetables are quite costly, especially in the winter. With some easy tricks you can reduce the amount you spend on food every month, and keep eating healthy, delicious meals.

1. Freeze’em

When I moved out of my parents’ house into my own (rented) apartment, my wife kept insisting that we buy ourselves a large fridge with a large freezer on the bottom. I was a bit reserved at the time, considering the price, but I gave in. In time I realized that it was a great idea.

Nowadays I spend a lot of time during the summer hunting for bargains at the farmer’s market. Fruit, vegetables, spices and herbs, no matter – I buy them in large amounts and cheap (as I like to haggle), and freeze them for later. This way I always have peas, kernel corn, spinach, dill, baby carrots, beets and similar things in my freezer – if I want to use them, I just get them out, defrost them and cook them. All year long. Thus I always have them at hand, and for a price that beats even the frozen goods sections at supermarkets.

2. Can’em

Again, during the season, you can make really good deals at the market. If your freezer is full – or you find products that you enjoy all year long, but they are seasonal – you can easily can them at home, just like our ancestors did back in the day.

Think pickles, ready made tomato sauce, pickled chilies, canned green beans, or even the fruits you love – the internet is full of recipes. And when you serve your own pickles to your guests, you can proudly say “I canned them myself” – and that’s something, too!

2. Buy them on sale

When it comes to non-perishable foodstuffs – staples like oil, rice, beans, pasta and sugar – I like to buy them in large quantities when they are on sale. It happens much more often than you might imagine. Rice, pasta and beans don’t spoil if you store them right, and you can keep the oil from going rancid if you store it in the fridge. This way you can always have reserves ready to cook when they are needed – spaghetti or risotto is ready in a matter of minutes.

And when the winter comes, and you see your storage full of delicious foods, you can sit back, relax by the fire and play some of your favorite games with your mind at peace. Red Flush Mobile is the best mobile casino to play at.
