As an aspiring rich person, I love to talk with and read about the wealthy. It fascinates me. How they were able to do what I want to do. There’s even something to learn about rich people when it comes to something as ordinary mundane as grocery shopping.
How do the rich grocery shop? Where do they go? What do they value? What can we learn and how can we better ourselves knowing this information?
The Items They Buy
I’m not normally one for people watching. But it’s fascinating to see what people put on the conveyor belts. It’s funny how much this process cuts through the BS of life. A person who throws on Little Debbie cakes, frozen pizzas and candy bars will likely be fat.
Rich people do not buy these items. This is because these items are mostly empty calories. So although a box of deserts may appear cheap, actually anything over $0 is expensive.
Rich people buy healthy food also beacuse their time is valuable. Healthy food gets and keeps a person healthy. Healthy people are more productive. They have more energy to do what needs to get done. I’ve shopped with rich people before. Their cart is a calydoscope of fresh colors. Is yours?
Where They Shop
I read someone’s blog post once where they mentioend seeing a new Mercedes at Walmart. They asked the question, “Frugal or crazy?” That’s a good question. I actually think crazy. I just don’t get why someone would shop at such a low priced American store whilst driving one of the best automobile marks on the planet. It doesn’t compute with me. No, the rich people I know shop at stores which give them pleasure. They are quality stores. They offer a good experience. Going back to time, rich people want their time to be productive and memorable. The experience should be pleasant.
But more and more I’m seeing rich people shop nearly exclusively online. I think even personal shoppers will because a thing of the past soon. Most definitely. Thanks to places like Amazon, a person can receive their goods right to their front door. This has long been true for presved foods but now is true for refrigerated foods as well. I predict the day will soon arrive where shopping online will even be cost competitive with shopping in-store. Keep an eye out for when this happens. The rich are beginning to do this now. But pretty soon, everyone will be able to justify the expense – because there won’t be anything to justify. It’ll be cheaper!
How Often They Shop
Rich people don’t shop often. Making money gives them more of a thrill than spending it. They limit their shopping to a sweet spot. That’s the spot where they go as seldom as possible, yet can still get fresh fruits and veggies. People who are doing well financially shop once per week, on a schedule. It’s usually something like Friday evening or Sunday afternoon. They know when they go. This way they can plan. There’s a saying… fail to plan, plan to fail. The rich are very aware of this saying. Going too often is a fail. It’s a waste of time, resources and energy.
The Quantities
Rich people tend to appreciate deals. This means they often buy in bulk. Buying in bulk saves time and money. I’ve met some interesting people while shopping at these ‘big box’ stores. I even watched an interview of Mark Cuban once where he said once a year he buys all his toothpaste on Amazon. He says the best thing someone can do for their finances is to be a smart shopper.
Cooking
Do rich people do a lot of cooking? The typical millionaire? Yes. If you’re getting up in the multimillionaire arena, you’ll find more people who eat out and/or outsource their in-home cooking. But the typical millionaire cooks a lot at home.
If you don’t enjoy cooking at home, make easy meals. Cook in bulk. Find a partner who likes to cook – ha. Whatever. A lot of people say they go out to eat because it saves time. For me, it doesn’t. If I order to my house, it sure does. But it’s quite expensive so most nights I’d rather just cook a simple meal. Simple can still definitely mean delicious.
What are your shopping habits?
Someone asked me the other day, “What three financial habits should a person get nailed down.” I said to focus on housing, transportation and shopping. If you can nail all three, you’ll do just fine. Yes, shopping, particularly something you do as often as grocery shop, is a fantastic place to start becoming wealthy.
To get and stay motivated, take the money you save and put it in a separate account. Use it to stay motivated. And then use the money to build wealth. Invest it. You’ll be surprised how a few extra quid a week will add up.

Sound advice Will. When I started saving for my house making a meal plan was the first thing I did. We used to spend so much money on eating out and take aways, but it is just a waste of money!
