I’ve often gotten a cash discount but usually at the mom and pop stores, not the big box stores. Sometimes you just have to ask for a discount…and sometimes you negotiate by walking away. I was at a Sleepy’s looking at mattresses, we weren’t planning on buying that day…we were just browsing. But when we were about to leave, the manager offered us $100 off so we took it. We probably should have negotiated a little more!

I really could do a better job at this. My personality pushes me away from creating conflict, which is what I see the whole negotiating process as being. That’s probably my mind and emotions making more out of it than it is.

Great tips! I am heading into the city today to look for a new vehicle so I will be using some negotiating. The biggest thing that I have noticed helping me is discipline. Having the discipline to actually leave the store if I don’t get the price I want. It works really well with items that have a really high mark-up, like furniture and jewelry.
