6 Home Repairs to Do Yourself and When to Hire a Professional

By Sara

One of the most frustrating parts of owning a home is facing the responsibility of making repairs when things go wrong. Unlike renters, homeowners don’t have the luxury of calling a landlord to deal with the issue.

Oftentimes, homeowners want to save money, so they choose to make repairs themselves. If done incorrectly, though, these attempts could be dangerous and even make the problem worse and even more expensive to fix.

To help you avoid making this mistake, we’ve compiled a list of home repairs that you can do yourself and repairs where you should hire a professional.

Repairs You Can Do Yourself

You’ll encounter some minor yet inhibiting and annoying repairs as a homeowner. The following repairs happen quite often and are easy to fix, so you can do them yourself.

1. Leaky Faucets

That constant dripping sound coming from your bathroom or kitchen faucet isn’t only an annoyance, but it could cost you a pretty penny on your next water bill.

Fortunately, this home repair doesn’t require a professional. With a quick turn of a wrench and a YouTube tutorial, you can repair that leaky faucet in a matter of minutes.

2. Holes in the Wall

You’ll surely encounter a hole or two in one of your walls. Whether it’s from moving furniture or opening a door too quickly and jamming the doorknob in the wall, these holes are pretty easy to fix.

All you need is some drywall, spackle, and maybe a saw to trim the drywall to patch up the hole. This can all be done in a day!

3. Clogged Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals are one of the most convenient kitchen appliances available. However, they do tend to become clogged easily, especially if you don’t know what kind of food can and cannot go inside it.

This is an easy fix if you’re willing to duck your head under the sink and have a thorough look. Sometimes you’ll have to open up the pipe and get the clog out, while other times, you’ll just need to stick your hand down the drain.

Repairs for the Professionals

Now, you may come across some more major and dangerous repairs in your home that surely require the expertise of a professional.

4. Floor Replacement

With the latest trend of hardwood floors sweeping home interiors, many homeowners are considering ripping up their carpets and laying down shiny wood floors. While it looks easy to do on HGTV, this is definitely something to be left to a professional.

5. Electric Issues

When it comes to problems with the electricity in your home, you’re going to want to call a reliable electrician. Getting messed up with those wires and grids can be extremely dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.

6. Foundation Repairs

The foundation of your home is, well, your home’s foundation. It’s one of the most important structures that keep your home safe and standing. However, when you notice a crack in the foundation, this can cause some significant problems throughout the house.

Fixing this is definitely best left up to a professional with the right experience and tools, such as Brickworks Property Restoration.
