Four Ways of Making Things Frugal at Home

  1. The area that I focus on the most is food. I used to spend so much money on food, but really it’s the easiest category to make substantial savings. It can be tough to limit your expenses on stuff like cell phones and electricity, but with food you make decisions everyday that affect how much you spend. It might seem tough to give up the restaurants and take out food at first, but once it becomes habit you’ll be amazed at how much you’re saving.

    • I agree. So many people get carried away in this category, but I guess it often falls under ‘entertainment’. Personally I feel that we have ‘control’ over our finances now that we have mastered this category!

  2. I focus on saving money on my cell phone. I can often spend $200 each month without realising. I added up my food bill too and realise that I spent $600 in the last month. What do you advise?

    • Wow! That is some spend. I would advise you start by limiting the number of times you go out per week and take it from there. You need small steps for a big change! Don’t try and cut it out altogether, overnight – this is very unlikely to work. Plan your meals in advance.

  3. I didn’t realise you could have mobile phone insurance included in your current account…

  4. These are all great tips! We watch our food spending like a hawk. It is sooooo easy to go over our grocery budget when we don’t watch it!!! This month we went over almost $100. I’m not sure what happened there.

  5. Food spending is the easiest to cut, we are slowly trying to whittle it down. I also am bad about leaving lights on. eeee! :/

  6. Of those categories, I’d say food kills us. I won’t do without fresh produce, and it gets expensive. I usually buy all household good at the grocery store also to avoid multiple trips. We wait for a sale and it is usually as cheap as at WalMart. Do you have those where you live? Anyway, this month we are going to stick to $400 for the three of us for food plus dog food and household good. I’ll hold myself accountable now that I said it.
